SCIENTIFIC NAME

A.    Learning Objective
Writing the scientific names for each species of organism
B.     Introduction
Linnaeus system of classification uses two words for naming a species of organism. This kind of system is known as binomial nomenclature. . This is a scientific name. The first name is a genus and the second is a species. The spelling of the first word begins with a capital letter, while the second letter with a lower case. These two words are italicized or underlined. For example, the scientific name of rice plant is Oryza sativa .  Oryza is a genus name, while sativa is species name. Why scientific names are used?
An orange golden fish living in fresh water is called goldfish. The names of plants and animals are taken from where they come from or their characteristics. These names are used in everyday life. Biologists prefer to use the scientific names. There are some reasons why scientific names are more preferable.
1.   There are no living things having exactly the same name. For example, bananas   (Musa paradisiaca) are called gedang in East Java, pisang in Central Java. But in West Java gedang is used to refer to papaya    (Carica papaya)
2.   Scientific names rarely change.
3.   Scientific names are the same all over the world.
The language used is Latin, because this language never changes.
